Privacy, with clarity.
Public civic information should be easy to read. Personal information should be collected with purpose and kept separate from public records.
Browsing without an account
Representative profiles and legislative records are available without signing in. We do not infer your residence, voter registration, eligibility, party affiliation, or voting choices from your device location.
Address searches
When address suggestions are available, the text you type is sent to Google Maps to suggest complete addresses. Choosing a suggestion fills the address field; it does not submit your representative search. You can always enter an address yourself. Suggestions and their data sources are credited below the search field. Google processes requests under the Google Privacy Policy.
When you submit an address, the configured address provider—Google Maps Geocoding or the U.S. Census Bureau’s Geocoder—finds its location. Official Census geography and Hawaiʻi government geography services use that location to match districts and counties. Those geography requests contain coordinates, not your street-address text. Your results identify the address provider used; we do not automatically send your address to a second geocoder when a search fails.
Your search address is not automatically saved to your account. Your browser submits it in a form rather than adding it to the public page URL, and search results are marked private and not stored in shared caches. Address providers may process request information under their own privacy policies. Census address matches estimate a location along an address range; results near a district boundary should be checked with the relevant public office.
Your optional account
An account stores your email address, a securely derived password hash, and your saved bill positions. A name and profile address are optional and can be cleared in account settings. Saved positions are private to your account; public community reaction totals are aggregated.
Optional district response pilot
Your private saved bill positions are not automatically included in district totals. If you explicitly opt a separate response into the pilot, we store your account identifier, bill and text-version context, preference, matched legislative district identifiers, and response dates. We do not store the submitted street address or coordinates with that response.
District matching uses the address provider described above. It does not verify residence or voter eligibility. One account can hold one pilot response per bill and can update or withdraw it. Totals are shown only after at least five accounts participate in the same district and bill-version context. Participants select themselves, responses may follow a legislative vote, and the results are not a census or representative survey. Account deletion removes pilot responses.
Essential session cookies
Govotency uses an essential, HttpOnly session cookie to keep you signed in. The session is validated on the server, expires, and can be revoked. Changing or resetting your password signs out existing sessions. We do not add advertising trackers to the application.
Account recovery and deletion
Requesting a password reset sends a time-limited, single-use link to the account’s email address when delivery is configured. Deleting your account removes the account, active sessions, saved positions, and current reactions. Public civic records remain available; database backups and preserved historical source records follow the operator’s retention procedures.
Source transparency and limits
Civic source records can be incomplete, stale, or corrected. Check the source and effective dates before relying on a record. Comparison results describe the documented sample and should not be treated as political recommendations.
Notifications and identity verification are not part of the initial application. Any future introduction requires separate consent, retention, and privacy decisions.
